Set up a Microphone wizard crashes as soon as I say "Peter..."

I was trying to sign into Lync when this issue occurred. I checked the Lync logs and found that there was an issue with the audio device not being "a telephony device". Strangely, it works well with my Lync client from the store (Windows 8.1), however, the Office 2013 version records that error.

I thought of reconfiguring the microphone. I opened the wizard and selected the third option (built in microphone) and clicked Next. The moment I said Peter from the text there, the wizard closed. I tried the other two devices as well, hoping one o the options would work, but all of them happened to crash. Also, the wizard remains on the screen until I say Peter - the moment some sound is detected, it crashes.

There's nothing regarding this in the Event Viewer. I uninstalled the driver (Conexant Smart Audio HD) and scanned for hardware changes which automatically installed the device again. I have tried disabling the Bluetooth devices as well. Could someone please help me with this situation? I remember launching Lync successfully about a couple of months ago... I don't know what changed.

Hi Mr Sengupta! You see, the issue is that I don't get that far at all... Lync just doesn't start up. When I launch Lync, it just says "starting Lync..." and then it crashes, saying, "Lync stopped working".

Also, when I launch the Set up a Microphone wizard, and start saying, "Peter...", it disappears.

Thank you for the reply though - I couldn't get myself to work on my notebook ever since - the keyboard had a problem and this was with the service center or quite a while. Apologies for the late response.

with the service center or quite a while. Apologies for the late response.

So you should unmark the Answer to make sure that everyone involved sees this thread is still active.

FWIW my approach would probably be to try to diagnose the crash symptoms.  You could use ProcMon to at least find out what was happening leading up to that; otherwise I think you might have to 'shoot a dump.

Good luck

Hi Robert,

OK, I'll get back once I'm done diagnosing the dumps. The microphone works on other applications like Skype without a problem.
